Russia's Defense Ministry says a general has been executed in battling in Syria.
The service said Sunday that Lt. Gen. Valery Asapov "was at a summon post of Syrian troops, helping the Syrian officers in the operation for the freedom of the city of Deir al-Zor."
State news organization Tass announced that "because of a mortar shelling by the ISIS (Islamic State gathering), Asapov was mortally injured."
